ABSTRACT

This research indicates that, for suffusion to occur, the following three criteria have to be satisfied:

Criterion 1: the size of the fine soil particles must be smaller than the size of the constrictions between the coarser particles, which form the primary fabric (i.e. the basic skeleton) of the soil.
