ABSTRACT

Loads may be carried to the foundations of a bridge by compression, tension or bending/shear, Figure 17.1, or by combinations of these three actions. Arches which work principally in compression, are among the most beautiful of structures, effortlessly spanning great distances. They may also be among the most economical, as they may be made from cheap and readily available materials such as stone or concrete, while tension and bending both require expensive materials such as steel or fi bre composites.
