ABSTRACT

Most people spend the major part of their adult life working. The 40 or so years now occupied by a career, unlike the work life of earlier, more stable periods of history, are constantly subject to changes affecting every individual’s environment, especially his or her work environment. Today, becoming competent in an occupation does not suffice: individuals must also be capable of adapting to endless modifications and transformations that never cease to change the conditions under which they do their jobs.
