ABSTRACT

This paper describes an approach to building a spatial mapping tool for wild land areas that captures qualitative perceptions of the factors affecting wild land quality. The methodology uses an Internet questionnaire designed specifically to collect softer, perceptual information such as naturalness, that is, forest and land cover, and artifactualism, which are important wild land indicators. This information is then translated to the spatial domain using a fuzzy logic modelling framework that combines

these perceptions to produce a fuzzy wild land map. The method has been applied to the South West area of the Cairngorms.
