ABSTRACT
Until recently, women spent little time in the hypoestrogenemic period following menopause. At the turn of the century, the average life expectancy for women was about 58 years. The mean age at the time of menopause was 51 years (Greendale et al., 1999). This meant that the menopause often did signal the beginning of the end of life.
