ABSTRACT

With the increasing interest in designing usable systems and the increasing recognition of the need to provide accessibility for people with specific potential requirements, the member bodies of ISO Technical Committee 159, Ergonomics, have adopted a work item on software accessibility which has resulted in the development of a Technical Specification, ISO 16071 Ergonomics of human-system interaction-guidance on software accessibility (International Organisation for Standardisation, 2000). This work represents a response to the need to provide as wide a range of potential users as possible with access to software products and applications. Recognition of the significance of ensuring that people with disabilities are able to play a full role in the job market is reflected in the increasing number of legal requirements (such as the Americans with Disabilities Act 1992, new legislation requiring US Government procurement to ensure accessibility, etc.).
