ABSTRACT
It seems that astronomy attracts more than its fair share of people who depart very markedly from the conventional line. These folk are often dismissed as cranks. Perhaps it would be kinder to call them independent thinkers. I am not here referring to the genuine cranks, notably the astrologers and the creationists, but to those who simply go off at a tangent. Let us take a brief look at some of them.
