ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION The introduction of Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH) technology has revolutionised the metal halide market due to its superior colour characteristics. Unlike the traditional fused silica (quartz) metal halide (QMH) products, the CMH lamps have a constant colour, both lamp-to-lamp and over life combined with very good colour rendering. However, the price of the CMH lamps is considerably higher than that of QMH due to the cost of the PCA arc tube used for CMH By identifying the underlying reasons for the good performance of CMH, we were able to develop QMH lamps with performance matching CMH and a cost that is considerably lower. This paper explains the technology used to realise this.
