ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Convection plays a crucial role in controlling temperature profiles, species segregation, tungsten transport and reaction, and a whole range of phenomena of importance to the HID lamp performance and maintenance. We would like to explore the effects of convection by building models for horizontal burning HID arc where convection has the most pronounced visual effect - arc bowing. To simplify the modeling, we first concentrate on the study of the positive column arc models without the complications of the electrode plasma region. For such plasmas, the 2D LTE model is quite adequate without the full 3D descriptions. The outline of this work is as follows:
