ABSTRACT

Gopher, named after the University of Minnesota’s mascot, was a system for organizing and displaying files on Internet servers. It was the first Internet navigation tool and was a distributed document delivery system. It was an infoserver that could deliver text, graphics, audio, and multimedia to clients. This system was used, especially at universities, from 1992 through 1996. Organized text files could be brought from servers all over the world to one’s computer. Gopher was a menu-based information searching tool that allowed users to access various types of databases, such as FTP archives and white pages databases. It was shortly replaced by the World Wide Web. Most databases have been converted to Web sites because they can be more easily accessed.
