ABSTRACT

In a general definition, strength and stiffness properties cover everything from hardness through tensile stress~strain and including dynamic stress~strain tests, creep, and stress relaxation. For convenience, the definition is restricted in this chapter to the tests commonly referred to as short-term or static stress~strain; i.e., those where the effects of long times or cycling are ignored. In particular, time dependent properties are covered in Chapter 11 and dynamic tests in Chapter 21. Clearly, these distinctions are somewhat arbitrary.
