I. INTRODUCTION In the first years of gas chromatography one of the (now defunct) instrument companies liked to use a slogan in its advertisements, saying that 'The column is the heart of the gas chromatograph." Indeed, this is true: after all, separation takes place in the column and even the best instrument cannot improve it.
