ABSTRACT

The best can be accomplished only if it is pleasant and involves a creator's joy. Arne Tiselius, 1969, in a letter when the author was appointed a professor in biochemistry

In his invitation letter, the editor of this volume, Dr. Haleem J. Issaq, asked me ' 'to write a chapter about my experiences in and contributions to the advances in separation science." However, in several sections, including this one, I will-according to my and his wish-also refer to some episodes in my research career and, at the same time, make a few personal reflections and comments. They should be considered as an attempt to shed light on incidents and attitudes which are of general interest to scientists and perhaps also to scholars in the history of science and ideas.
