THE INFLUENCE OF BRACE ANGLE AND INTERSECTION LENGTH ON TUBULAR JOINT CAPACITY

Abstract Static capacity equations for tubular joints under axial loading include a sinO term to account for the inclination of the brace to the chord. In the UK Health and Safety Executive Guidance Notes, an additional factor Ka allows for the increase in intersection length with brace angle. For a 45° Y joint, this results in a further 20% increase in the characteristic capacity over the otherwise identical T joint.
