ABSTRACT

Flexible pavement layers are formed by an interlocked aggregate framework stabilised by a bitumen, or a modified bitumen binder. The binder partly fills the voids within the aggregate framework. A layer is formed by initially coating the aggregate particles with a film of binder, the mixture is spread, mechanically or by hand, the mixture is then compacted by rolling or impact. Impact is normally restricted to the reinstatement of small, or restricted width areas of material. During compaction the binder is displaced from the surface of the aggregate particles to the void space between the interlocking aggregate framework.
