ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Stadia, grandstands and other developments for spectator sports form a significant and growing slice of the construction market. In football alone, many clubs have commissioned substantial stadia developments following the issue of the Taylor Report [1], the increasing popularity of football requiring larger capacities than that provided by purely fixing seats to existing terraces, and the growing financial incentives of new, larger facilities. In the past 10 years 12 of the 92 Football Association Premiership and Football League clubs have moved to all new stadia with an aggregate capacity of 236,600 [2]. To this can be added the numerous developments for other sports such as the Rugby Football Union stadium at Twickenham and the plethora of grandstands provided for professional club rugby, cricket, horseracing and lower league football clubs.
