ABSTRACT

Screening for breast cancer was introduced throughout the U.K. following the Forrest report (1986). Essentially all women between the ages of 50 and 64 are invited for mammographic examination every three years. This means that annually there is the potential of screening some 1,000,000 women. These mammograms (at least two Xrays per woman) are visually examined by experienced radiologists around the country at 120 screening centres. It is important that their task is efficiently designed to aid their task of visually detecting any possible cancer at its earliest.
