ABSTRACT

Injuries suffered at work are a common and serious problem, representing a major cause of mortality and morbidity in Western countries. In Great Britain during 1979 for example, one in 200 workers in manufacturing and construction industries were killed or suffered severe injuries. As with many other similar places of work, ships are often associated with high accident rates. Due to the nature of the ships’ design and the conditions in which personnel on board must operate e.g. confined space and motion, risk is high and accidents and injuries are likely.
