ABSTRACT

In the process industry, especially the use of mimic displays in VDU-based process control systems is still increasing. As to the introduction and implementation of Distributed Control Systems (DCSs), it seems appropriate to make a distinction between industries such as the petro-chemical industry and industries providing a public service, such as the nuclear power industry. In the first a DCS is implemented almost as a standard piece of equipment. In the latter kind of industries, the implementation is a slow and cautious process. Since the first introduction of DCSs in the beginning of the seventies, the display design flexibility has expanded, and is still expanding. The increased flexibility has, however, not resulted at the same time in better displays, i.e. displays supporting performance in a more efficient way. Especially in the petrochemical process industry this has resulted in display design that is technology-driven and only loosely linked to the different aspects of the task of the operator.
