ABSTRACT

Napier University’s Building Performance Centre have recently completed a major research project, ‘The Assessment of Lifespan Characteristics and AsBuilt Performance of Flat Roofing Systems’(McPhillimy et al, 1993). The project took three years to complete and included physical surveys of 680 large, flat roofed buildings (total surveyed area of 500,000 m2). The sample roofs were drawn from the building stocks of a number of Local and Regional Authorities in Scotland and England. The physical surveys were complemented by analyses of the available maintenance, cost records, specification data, and design information for the roofs and this enabled the features of different roof system types to be evaluated.
