ABSTRACT

This is a personal view of the introduction of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) as it has applied to one school. The Holgate School is a coeducational age 11 to 18 comprehensive school with approximately 1,300 pupils on the roll. There are eight forms in each year group from year 7 to year 11, and a sixth form (years 12 and 13) of about 110 students. Most pupils live within the catchment area of the school, which covers the town of Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. Hucknall has a population of around 30,000 and is situated in the industrialised west of the county, close to the M1, and 12 kilometres north of the centre of the city of Nottingham (see figure 9.1). The school is funded through Nottinghamshire County Council, although it manages its own budget.
