ABSTRACT

This chapter describes ergonomic principles for the design of hand-operated devices. A hand-operated device is defined as any product that is used as a hand held product, such as a hand-tool, or is a hand-operated product, such as a computer keyboard or mouse. The chapter does not describe design information for product components , such as the shape, size or force required to operate any product controls , such as buttons or switches , or provide detailed information on the design of any visual displays on the product, such as liquid crystal displays or product labelling as might be found on cellular telephones , hand-held calculators or remote control devices. Rather, the focus of this chapter is on the design principles that allow any hand-operated product to be used in a good posture that enables the user to sustain productive work in a safe manner.
