Today, the commercial production of Spirulina biomass is carried out exclusively in open systems (Vonshak and Richmond, 1988). Closed reactors have so far been employed for research and in small field installations (Torzillo et al., 1986, 1993; Richmond et al., 1993; Chini Zittelli et al., 1993).
