ABSTRACT

In addition to their well-known uses as alkylating agents, Grignard reagents have also been used as bases. There are two general classes of Grignard base reactions: metalJation [Eq. ( 1 )J and elimination [Eq. (2)] . Discrete metallated species may be used in intermolecular addition reactions, or allowed to undergo intramolecular rearrangement to the desired product. Elimination reactions involve loss of a stable magnesiate species, such as alkoxide or halide.
