ABSTRACT
Similarly, reaction of l ,4-dichlorobutane or 1 ,4-dibromobutane with 2 gave trans-l -phenyl-2-[(E)-2-phenylethenyl]cyclohexane 3 as the only cyclized product in 5 1 and 40% isolated yield, respectively. Surprisingly, 2 cyclized with methylene dichloride to generate only a three-membered cycl ic compound, trans-l -phenyl-2-[(E)-2-phenylethenyl] cyclopropane 6 in 76% isolated yield. Representative examples util izing this approach are shown in Tables 2 and 3 .
