Toothed and serrated washers are also installed under a screw head or nut. When the fastener is tightened, the washer digs into both the fastener and the clamped component. This increases the friction in the assembly and can prevent relative motion and loosening. However, washers of this type can easily damage the bearing surfaces of the joint.
