ABSTRACT

Maneuvers that promote clearance of mucus are routinely employed in patients with CF. The “ gold standard” has been manual chest percussion with postural drainage. This is usually performed two to four times daily, often preceded by aerosol inhalation therapy and followed by vigorous coughing. During childhood, this is usually performed on a regular basis by a parent. For many patients, compliance tends to wane during adolescence and adulthood for a variety of reasons: it is time-consuming, boring, sometimes painful, and usually requires the assistance of another person.
