ABSTRACT
About ten years ago M. Cotlar observed that the Hilbert transform in a weighted L 2-space is bounded if and only if a related Toeplitz-like kernel is positive definite. That remark was exploited to establish the Cotlar-Sadosky lifting theorem [10], thus starting a unified approach to several problems in analysis, an overview of which can be seen in [11].
