ABSTRACT

The prediction of C-0 bond cleavage was steadily testable by studying the fate of the 180 of [15)80]all-trans-retinol after enzyme catalyzed isomerization in e60]Hz0 containing buffer, using field desorption mass spectrometry.1 This experiment demonstrated unequivocally that the 11 ~cis-retinol product formed contained only 160 (1) (Figure 7A). Hence, complete cleavage and replacement of the C-0 bond accompanies isomerization.
