ABSTRACT

Abstract . Domain decomposition methods are well established as preconditioners in the iterative solution of stationary elliptic problems. In the nonstationary case the concept of domain splitting may be directly combined with time stepping leading to "blockwise" implicit solution procedures . This approach is well understood in the strongly parabolic case, but much less is known for transport dominated problems . In this note we discuss the application of this domain splitting technique to convection diffusion problems in combination with the streamline diffusion finite element method. The ultimate goal is the development of a parallelizable finite element scheme for solv ing the nonstationary Navier-Stokes equations .
