ABSTRACT

The Mediterranean basin (southern Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa) is an important area for durum wheat (Triticum turgidum spp. durum) production, covering more than 75 percent of the land under cultivation (Impiglia et al., 1998). Recently, durum cultivation in Australia increased from about 50,000 t in 1989-1990 to about 500,000 t in 1998-1999. It has further increased to about 750,000 t in the past three years.
