ABSTRACT

Over 400 herbicides have been discovered and developed in the past 55 years. There is almost no weed problem that cannot be solved by herbicides. Today, high-yield agri culture heavily depends on herbicides, as they constitute a vital and integral compo nent of weed management practices. Many of the herbicides widely used in the 1960s and 1970s have been phased out and replaced by the newer and more potent herbi cides discovered later. Use of some older herbicides has been considerably restricted, reduced and even eliminated in view of environmental and toxicological problems and the availability of more effective and safer chemicals.
