ABSTRACT
Modernization of horticulture has led to an enormous decrease in the number of vegetable species once consumed by our ancestors. It has also narrowed the genetic base of the small number still extant of these species by replacing the local, unselected cultivars with a few highly selected, high-yielding and high-quality cultivars.
