ABSTRACT

Although, separation of plant species from each other has been demonstrated by different authors to a large extent, obscure points exist about the origin of saffron. It cannot be concluded precisely whether saffron, which has an old history to plantation ranica may perhaps have originated from wild species of saffron growing in South Africa and the Mediterranean basin. Ambiguity also exists about the Iridaceous phylogeny to which saffron belongs (7, 14, 16).
