ABSTRACT

Histopathology is an important tool for diagnosing fish diseases (Sindermann et al, 1980; Johnson and Bergman, 1984; Meyers and Hendricks, 1985; Hinton et a/., 1987; Noga, 1996). Occasionally, gross observations are sufficient to make a correct diagnosis, but usually more information is necessary to determine the etiology of clinical disease or mortality. It is important to have a systematic approach to necropsy examination, sampling tissues and evaluating histopathology (Reimschuessel, 1993, 1999). This chapter will describe the basic histopathological changes found in diseased or injured tissues. Specific diseases will be covered in detail in subsequent chapters.
