ABSTRACT

Drug injecting is now found in more than 120 countries, and HIV infection associated with drug injecting in over 80 of them (Stimson, 1996). The long established patterns of injecting which are found in developed countries-for example in Europe, North America and Australia-have now been joined by the spread of injecting in many developing countries. The recent spread of drug injecting has been noted in South America, in India, in many parts of Eastern Europe and in central Asia, and in some parts of Africa (Des Jarlais & Friedman, 1994; Wodak et al., 1993a).
