ABSTRACT

As anticipated by Burnet (1), Lederberg (2) and Jerne (3) many years ago, T cell development is tightly linked to T cell repertoire selection. This is so because T cell development is controlled by T cell receptors for antigen at immature stages (4) preceding the mature stage, at which time engagement of the T cell receptor by antigen can result in the gain of effector function, such as cytokine secretion or cytolytic activity.
