ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The authors of the present study try to offer answers about the contribution of the modern, sophisticated technologies to an engagement with the intrinsic spiritual message that is expressed through Byzantine iconographic tradition. The extensive examination of three great fresco ensembles created between 1295AD, and 1557

AD supplied a large volume of information about the drawing, the colour, the working materials and the process of rendering the painting. The fact that these details demonstrate both the particular characteristics that concern each fresco ensemble independently and those that create relationships among them, led us to speculate on the relationship between the “code” underlying the manner of painting Byzantine icons and the spiritual message that they express.
