ABSTRACT

Human factors as a discipline deals primarily, although not exclusively, with people at work. Its objectives are to promote safety, efficiency, wellbeing, and productivity by achieving a good match between the human and the job. Such a match makes the tasks, equipment, demands, and conditions of the job as compatible as possible with human strengths and weaknesses. Human factors, being based on a knowledge and understanding of human beings, can be applied to every work environment and to every human activity that constitutes work. Certification is human work. Accordingly, human factors can be applied to certification. The application of human factors to certification should result in improvements and in an understanding of why the improvements have occurred and of how further improvements might be made.
