ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The object of this paper is to present the groundwater pollution case-study of Rio Maior, Portugal. It is not an attempt to solve any real case of pollution but rather to apply the mathematical and experimental methods developed in FERREIRA 1986 and 1987 to a real hydrogeological situation. Groundwater pollution scenarios with real characteristics will be defined. The results obtained will be those expected if the decisions to be taken by the decision-makers in the Rio Maior project are similar to those considered in the selected scenarios. The potential pollution problem of the white-sand aquifer is described as well as the possible contamination of well B5, which supplies most of the water for the city of Rio Maior. The analysis of the results obtained, in the way presented in the paper, will supply an approximate view of the expected (noxious) environmental impact effects, which will simplify decisions and allow a more realistic future management of the case-study region.
