ABSTRACT

Process Pipebridges utilising bulk radiological shielding perform a key function within the overall reprocessing operations at Sellafield. The pipebridge construction discussed in this paper, consists of a concrete multispan beam and column structure connecting various process buildings within the factory site. The bridge system carries pipe arrays which are contained within a stainless steel liner, over a total distance of 747m. The structure is generally supported on large diameter bored piles, with pad foundations where piles are impracticable. Pre-cast concrete beams of spans between 10m and 27m are supported on columns of typical height 13m. To provide a degree of seismic isolation the majority of beams are seated on elastomeric bearings. Articulation joints are provided at certain locations.
