Investigation of the validity of equivalent linearization of non-linear material properties

ABSTRACT Non-linear material properties are often represented by equivalent linear ones and are used in the analysis of response of structures and soils subjected to earthquake loads. The paper looks at the validity of this approach of analysis in connection with soils by comparing response obtained from non-linear ones with that from equivalent ones. Only a single degree of freedom system is used for this comparison.
