ABSTRACT

The consequences of injury, including the likelihood of permanent disability and death, increase with age. Older adults differ from younger adults in capabilities and limitations. Agerelated cognitive and perceptual changes can affect the processing of warning information as described in the communicationhuman information processing (C-HIP) model (Wogalter, DeJoy, & Laughery, 1999). For each of these stages, findings in the cognitive aging literature are reviewed, and general cognitive or perceptual principles are identified and discussed. Examples of age-related differences in warning processing are described, and several potential design solutions are suggested.
