ABSTRACT

The presence of man-made high voltage falls into three main purpose-oriented modes in which the interdisciplinary nature of high-voltage technology is fully apparent from the numerous and varied industrial processes in which it appears. The first mode is the use of high voltage in electric power transmission to avoid excessive line currents which would render the transmission system uneconomical. The second mode in which high voltage is utilized is based on the fact that bodies charged under high voltage develop an electrostatic force. The third mode of high-voltage presence makes use of the ability of high voltage to initiate ionization in dielectric materials where energy is subsequently released in controlled quantities. The extension of high-voltage technology from energy transmission to encompass many other industrial applications has involved various areas of electrical engineering and science, e.g., circuit analysis, measurement techniques, and transient recording.
