The strength of the bond can be identified as the maximum stress, rmax, or as the maximum elastic strain energy, t/max, per unit bond area. In terms of the maximum bond stress and the bond stiffness, the bond energy can be given as

Results from the paper by Thorpe et al. [89] were obtained with the foregoing expressions. These expressions are based on the assumptions that the fiber and bond material behaves elastically up to failure and that bond failure is catastrophic when the maximum stress at the end of the test specimen is reached. Furthermore, it is assumed that the deformation of the shive is negligible. The experimental materials used in the referenced study consisted of loblolly pine chlorite holocellulose fibers and Scotch pine thermomechanical pulp fibers. The results are shown in Table 4.
