ABSTRACT
LeachphenotypeRBCshaveaweakexpressionofKellbloodgroupantigens(reviewedin refs.4and57).GerbichnegativephenotypeRBCsalsoexhibitthisproperty,therebyeliminating KellproteinasacandidateforthecauseoftheabnormalRBCpropertiesassociatedwiththe Leachphenotype.Theseresultsdo,however,suggestthataninteractionwithatleastsomeof theaminoacidsencodedbyexon3oftheglycophorinCgenearerequiredforthenormal expressionofKellbloodgroupantigens(4,57).
