ABSTRACT

Progress has also been made in the domestication of the American lobster. At the St. Andrews lobster culture facility, a selection program for warm-water tolerance and rapid growth in confined conditions was conducted for 15 years. At the end of the program, some of the broodstock in the system were three generations removed from their wild ancestors. However, without a developing industry there was no justification for maintaining the stock, and these valuable strains were lost when the program was terminated.
