The phenomena that result from the action of external electric fields on dispersed systems are currently used in many methods of characterization of dispersed particles, as well as in technology. The response of a dispersed system to an applied electric field may have different physical natures. The most important ones for the characterization of suspended particles are the purely electrical and the electromechanical responses.
