In recent years a large number of high-rising buildings, Nanpu and Yangpu bridges and the TV tower were constructed by using pumped high-strength concrete in Shanghai. Both Nanpu and Yangpu bridges are one-span, dual-pylon, dualcable-stayed bridges over Huangpu river, with the main span length of 423m and 602m, pylon height (pumping height) of 150m and 208m, and strength of 40MPa and 50MPa respectively. The pumping height in one shot of the Shanghai TV tower is 350m. A series of measures had to be taken to ensure high-early strength, low creep and optimum pumpability, such as optimization of concrete mixture, addition of fly ash, development of high performance pumping agent, application of advanced production know-how and strict quality control. In this paper, optimization of pumpability, properties of concrete mixture and characteristics of hardened concrete were illustrated.
