ABSTRACT

Keeping to common usage as much as possible, I am speaking here about Reason, without the definite article, Vernunft in the Kantian sense, and about reasoning, as distinct from intellect or intelligence, Verstand, which I consider as included in and subordinate to the former. This is also different from ‘having reasons for something’. Reasons in the plural are usually means of explanation and thus

instrumental. I shall treat reason and reasoning as the ends of thinking and the beginnings of action.
